«Zürich ist keine Grossstadt. Aber eine Weltstadt.»

(Bern, 22.09.2011 – ) 7. Zürich Film Festival – Rede von Bundesrat Didier Burkhalter – Es gilt das gesprochene Wort

“Zürich ist keine Grosstadt. Aber eine Weltstadt.“ – “Zurich is not a big city, but a global city”. This is how the Austrian writer Friedrich Torberg once expressed the essence of Zurich. But as Switzerland as a whole has recently been ranked the most globalized country in the world, I can confidently say to you: I am a Zuricher.

For the coming eleven days, Zurich will be a vibrant cinematic city, and my wife and I are delighted to be here at the start to open the Zurich Film Festival.
This year the Festival that celebrates the seventh art is taking place for the seventh time. This is a milestone for the Zurich Film Festival, which, after six years of experimentation and development, has already become a well-established event. The Zurich Film Festival is constantly growing, despite ever-stronger international competition. Last year seventy films were shown; this year there will be ninety-six, including ten world premieres, twelve European and sixteen Swisspremiers. The Zurich Film Festival is playing host to several international stars this year, among them Sean Penn who will receive the Golden Icon Award for his life’s work and Laurence Fishburne, who is here tonight. To all of them I would like to offer a very warm welcome. The Festival is rapidly turning into an international event, launching films from all over the world: a global festival in a global city. This is a huge success, of which it can be duly proud and which deserves our appreciation. This year for the first time, the organisers have invited film critics from leading international newspapers and magazines, which is sure to boost the Festival’s visibility all around the world. At the same time, the Festival takes its audience seriously by offering a programme which avoids artificially juxtaposing ‘commercial’ and ‘demanding’ films. After all, there is really only one criterion by which to judge the quality of a film: Is it authentic? In other words, does it let us into the lives of others, without providing a caricature or reducing them to a cliché? Film is a mass medium, which means it is essentially democratic. At the end of the day, we all decide whether a film is a success or not. As the great Billy Wilder said:

“An audience is never wrong. A thousand people in the dark – that’s critical genius!”
The public decides. In this sense, the Zurich Film Festival is a typically Swiss festival.

Ladies and gentlemen
Being open to the world also means being open to the other regions of Switzerland. With its linguistic and cultural richness, our country can be rightly considered a special case of cosmopolitanism. Anyone looking for distant horizons will find them in Switzerland. This is an apparent paradox, and something we can be proud of. In particular, our multilingualism is unique, even though it may be rather more evident on paper than in everyday usage. For that reason I will now continue in one of our national languages – which, purely by chance, happens to be German.

Sein neuer Stadtmarketing-Slogan lautet bekanntlich: „World class.
